Before I tell you about possible activities, I’ll tell you something about Peters Paradise itself. Peters Paradise can be found in the rural area of Den Ham so it is lovely and peaceful, away from it all. It is situated in open landscape, where farm-houses are still far apart so you can enjoy a historic Dutch country live experience.
Farmland, you could say, with now and then a farmhouse. In Peter’s Paradise you can deeply relax and enjoy the space and tranquility. You’re totally free and away from all the business. You may even discover how loud and busy your normal surroundings are.
And if you are tired of all that quite relaxing, you can always visit some bussier places if you like. There are lots of locations and cities nearby to visit, like theme parks, zoo’s and many other possibilities to enjoy yourself or be active in (continue reading for that), but after doing that and coming back to the silence, to the nature of this space, then you can enjoy the silence again and find it soothing and relaxing, a space just for you, with all comforts present.
The wood pellet stove in your country home, makes for a cozy and warm stay. It is just like a wood stove, but better for the environment, You can enjoy yourself inside and outdoors and really take in the space, healthy air and really relax. You can enjoy a healthy meal on the covered sun terrace at the back of the country home, or just enjoy the sun and nice weather, you can meet the horses and the sheep and watch them, like they watch us. You can enjoy a healthy meal on the covered sun terrace at the back of the country home, or just enjoy the sun and nice weather, you can meet the horses and the sheep and watch them, like they watch us. And you can just be completely yourself here.
Enjoy a eating out in one of the wonderful nearby restaurants or on a terrace outside
When you are in Peter’s Paradise and don’t like to cook yourself, or even when you just love to go out and have a culinary pleasure, than there are local restaurants you can go. Den Ham itself has some, but I also think of Ommen, a nearby and lovely town to visit, with lots of small dining rooms and terraces and lovely boutiques.
De Zeven Zaligheden, is just around the corner.
But you don’t even have to travel that far, because nearby Peters Paradise you find the home restaurant of Martina and Ron, sweet folks that are very passionate about food and gladly pass that on to their guests.
Their restaurant is called De Zeven Zaligheden and is in actuality much more than a restaurant, because they also organize all kind of culinary workshops an activities, some of which might be combined with your stay here.
A wonderful place that offers wonderful food that is cooked by wonderful people (my neighbors) with a passion for quality. Each time I visit their website, I just get so inspired again in my relationship with fresh and healthy food. Then I really want to enjoy their warmth and company. So of course hey are my top pick for catering my own workshops too.
A day in the city
If you are used to a city life and the quiet and peace of Peters Paradise is a bit to much for you, than you might want to visit a more busy city nearby with all possibilities that offers. You can do that here too
Here, in the east of Holland, you for instance can go to cities like Arnhem and Apeldoorn, Assen, or Groningen, all on a reasonable distance to travel to, but also a day to Amsterdam, the internationally most well know Dutch city, or Utrecht is doable.
You can shop there, or enjoy the nightlife, but there are all kinds of beautiful parks there too, in which at summertime you can find festivals and live music to enjoy.
A day at an amusement park or zoo
Of course you can visit an national (or even international) well-know amusement park. Some parks in our region are:
- De Monkey hill (Apeldoorn , tel. +31(0)553575757)
- The Royal Burgers Zoo (Arnhem, tel. +31(0)264424534)
- Amusement park Slagharen (Slagharen, tel. +31(0)523683000)
- Theme park Walibi (Biddinghuizen, tel. +31(0)321329999 )
- Fairytale park Zuidlaren ( Zuidlaren, tel. +31(0)504091212 )
- Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen (Emmen, tel. +31(0)591850855 )
Of course this is not all there is, there are many more opportunities, like a hunnebed center, outdoor museums, a swimming paradise and much, much more. To enhance your anticipation, I gladly invite you to search for some outings on the Internet or visit a website like dagjeweg.nl. This list was just a starting point to help you out a bit.
If you find something else that is nice, please do inform me, so I can pass it through to the next quests.
Hiking or biking
Perhaps you enjoy being outside so much that you want to explore the neighborhood a bit. I understand that completely. There are lost of possibilities here to enjoy walking the surroundings, because there are lots of large routes set out here. Just follow the signs, so you don’t get lost (if you don’t want to). Let yourself be surprised by what you encounter on the route
At a least it is good for your health and constitution. Outdoor air seems to be healthy and you are surrounded by nature here. Please ask me where to go, because I’m glad to help and give you some tips,
If you want to combine being outdoors and taking in some history, than you might visit the hunnebeds on your walks. Perhaps it might take a small ride in your car first, but after that you can enjoy the surroundings an be outside.
On Facebook you can even find a genuine Hunebed guide. That too is possible, coaching with Hunebeds, very nice, although perhaps not something you might do when being on holiday.
Visite an Large Country Estate
If you imagine it to be like your own estate, you can feel rather rich and wealthy doing that. You can imagine I feel like that on a regular basis. My own kingdom and estate, with horses, sheep and all I need. It’s a place where friends can meet and where I can build whatever I desire.
If you want to visit an official estate, you can f.i. visit Castle Eerde surrounded by the beatiful Eerde estate. It is nearby “round the corner” (in Ommen) and it is a wonderful place to visit. Not for no reason it is added to the Dutch Natural monuments. Next to it you can find an area called “De Hoge Wal” (The high shore).
Het Eerder Achterbroek (The Back Pants of Eerde)
If you have visited Eerde estate anyways then it is easy to visit Eerder Achterbroek too (funy name, translated: “The Back Pants of Eerde” ). Het Eerder Achterbroek (300 ha) is part of the Eerde estate and has been owned by the owner of the castle: baron van Pallandt (according to the Twenterand Tourist website).
Het Eerder Achterbroek? Let me say it like this: Time stands still there. Wonderful!Peter
In the Eerder Achterbroek there is an old Saxon cultural landscape that is still very much intact.
There is a walking tour for children there from approximately 3 kilometer (or 2 miles), in which they get puzzles and challenges to perform. Very nice to take that tour, even for children that are supposed to be no longer a child. Child at heart, that fits me.
De Steile Oever (The Steep Bank), near Ommen
“De Steile Oever” is a well known area laying at the foot of the Besthmener hill. The name Steile Over (steep shore) can be taken quite literally. Is is namely a steep shore (a moraine) from the last ice age which shore is carved out by the river Regge.
Nowadays the Steep Shore is an old Meander of the River Regge. De Steile Oever is not only unique because of its steep banks, but also because of its beautiful sight axes. The sand drift of the Sahara is located in the Ommen forestry.
You will find hiking trails from 4 to 11 kilometers long, so walking alone can take quite a bit of time. A photo report of the steep bank,A photo report of the steep bank, taken from one of the lookouts, shows how green and wide this nature reserve is. Here you can still find lots of green space.
Beerze is a nice village nearby in Overijssel to visit. Its a small historical village located on the river Vecht, but it is also an enormous nature reserve to get lost in (or perhaps find yourself in, if that’s more appropriate).
Beerze is a nature reserve of about 400 hectares in size and can be found south of the river Vecht between Ommen and Mariënberg. It is nature reserve with a lot of variety. For example, there are the cultivated land along the river Vecht at the village Beerze, the original estate Beerze (consisting of a manor and estate forest), the shifting sands, beautiful old pine forests, an elongated oak (coppice) planted kamduin, extensive juniper stems, a peat pit complex and dry and wet heather.source: Landscape Overijssel
If you love sculpture gardens then you can visit Sculpture garden Witharen of Sculpture garden Heino. Those are places where I sometimes go for inspiration and for enjoyment of art. Of course there are lots of galleries to visit too. Here you can read about the Nijenhuis Castle, you can find in the centre of the sculpture garden in Heino.
Now I think about it, the term sculpture garden can describe Peters Paradise too. Right now there are quite a few statues and visual art there. “Peters sculpture garden” would however not fit the bill enough of my place. It is much more than that. So I’ll remain calling it Peters Paradise for now.
Something else perhaps?
So many people, so many wishes, so I can imagine you looking for something completely different than what I described here. In that case you can of course always ask me. I’me familliar with this area and this was just a selection to get you started. When I know what you want, then I could perhaps offer some specific suggestions, or ask around for you.
And then there are the workshops and activities I organize myself (or with friends) in Peters Paradise. Those, I did not mention here, because they will get their own area.
My workshops will be guided by myself or together with selected friends. Sometimes they will be primarily creative in nature, and sometimes they will be more aimed on spiritual- or personal growth, but sometimes it may just be something that is enjoyable to do en that will offer you a chance to spend some time with like-minded people. You will find those activities on this website too.
Whatever you may choose, I hope to meet you here sometime soon. Then you can experience yourself how wonderful it is to be here. Let’s meet soon!
