Something like Peter’s Paradise isn’t build in one dag or from nothing. This place is connecte with me, Peter, and is an result of years of work and creativity. Of-course others are involved in such a large project, so the history of Peter’s Paradijs harbors a long life of experiences and many friends.
Meeting Peter’s Paradijs is mostly a meeting with me, Peter, as an expression in space. In Peter’s Paradise I expressed many facets of my live, my values, my passion and my history. I am Peter, but Peter’s Paradijs is Peter just as much and the both are available for you as a wonderful holiday experience.
It all started long ago. I had another paradise in Bergen en I enjoyed that very much. It was a wonderful experience that I very much wanted to share with others, although at that moment it didn’t have the current shape. That makes sence too, because I was different back then too. All is changing all the time.
After I left my first paradise in Bergen, I went looking for quiet and more space. I found a wonderful place in the outskirts of Den Ham, quietly situated with a full hectare of land and an old worn down buildiing. The building would later become the current country home.
So I choose that spot (or it choose me) and strarted building.
My big dream, at that time, was to live in a house of straw. I already thought often about that idea and now it was time to make it a reality. Of course it was much too heavy and much too much work to do on my own, that’s why I used a large group of helpers. Such a project is lots of fun when you do it together with friends.
It became a large dome of straw bales that were put together by stikking branches of wollow through them, like a giant needles. The arc-shape ensures structural integrity en the straw is covered (inside and out) by loam. A very natural building, that from itself is well insulated and breathing at the same time. Exactly what I wanted. I now live there and enjoy that a lot.
To make sure that the loam wasn’t washed away the house has an extra layer over it (with some space in between), but it is all natural an breathing. I love it!
My house of straw freed the existing house (already build) up to do something different with. That too was a building project, in which I would renovate the main house so it would be a nice home for guests.
Not only it is nice to meet people in this way and pass on a wonderfull experience, but it also gives motivation and resources to further develop this place. I like to be of service in that way.
I’ve had some sheep and horses on my land and guests found me through natuurhuisje.nl. It gave me a lot of wonderful encounters and it gave me lots of joy to interact with guest and to take care of making their stay here exceptional. I still enjoy that a lot.
A dear friend (a White Prince) was willing and able to help me in making this website and together we created Peter’s Paradise online, as you read it right now. It is the next step and made me aware of how much this space has become an expression of myself and more than just a place. I’ve created my own paradise here. Wonderful!
Through my live, next to my other activities, I kept being active as a visual artist, For me that makes this place extra special too. It is a living piece of art to me, which I can happily share with all my guests.
I have here lots of space and freedom and every time a see a nice spot and am inspired to make it into something more beautiful, I am able to follow that impulse and start creating something new. That is a wealth that most people don’t poses (come and borrow that here, if you want).
In this way I created the statues I put in my home (you may see them when you’re here) and in the garden I have lots of statues made from my favorite material: Loam.
I follow my inspiration and work on projects whenever I love to work. Recently I created the statue you can see at the parking spot: the woman carrying heavy bags.
The statue was inspired on my mother, but during creation I start thinking about all women and how they have carried all kind of burdens in difficult times (disasters, wars) and it became more of a symbol for all mothers and women and the sacrifices they make. It is an important statue for me.
Other statues begin as an example for some workshop (like the floating girl), or I make in commission. Statues may travel in the world and find their own place.
I work from my heart and just follow my passions, so this place ever evolves, at least whenever I get passionate. The last years I loved to worked on larger building projects, like the building at the front that I build to give my horses a new home and make a nice space to work on my smaller projects.
That building too is build using loam en the inside insulation is made wood. Very nice for the environment and that I like too. Nature inside and out.
I guess this place is just about finished for now. The inside of the new building isn’t finished yet, but that will happen some day soon. Every project has learned me something and brought me some new contacts, so that also made me happy to do it.
The result is something beautiful what hasn’t been there before and I learn something too. I like to change something little in something of value. So I have always been free to create and free from the daily sorrows of other people.
My live is one big adventure and I have been able to do just about anything I wanted, that makes me a very rich man by any standard. Each creation in my Paradise has a story, not all I will tell here, but it is also nice and relaxed to be here. Quiet and spaceful, that should this place keep representing.
The next project was already planned, but I recently decided to do it already. I had planned to make a mobile home, so I could travel freely and visit family and friends and not be bound to a place. In the end I will trade this paradise in for a new paradise, maybe even my new mobile paradise.
This too will be a creation in my own shape, so don’t expect a camper or caravan, or something that you’ve already seen. It will again be something I build together with my friends. The project will start with a small truck and will end up being a home. How we get there exactly develops itself right now.
It is nice to create and share your own space, much nicer for me than moving in the space of another. The artist in me has his tricks and will form anything to his own. So it will be and is a paradise in movement, since it keeps me moving for already 7 decades. A long journey.
